Travelling and volunteering

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Bula,
I am a 22 year old female who is going to Fiji in a couple of weeks for 2 months (or longer)! I have been before, volunteering for 3 months, and absolutely adored it so am returning by myself. I am looking to get away from all the touristy bits (especially the Yasawas etc), but am not too sure where to go. As I am travelling by myself I want to be in a safe environment, but would rather be off the beaten track! Does anyone have any recommendations?

I would also love to do some volunteering (but not from big, costly organisations), so even if it's one day or several weeks, I would love to do some! I love kids so being in an orphanage or something like that would be amazing but I can't find anything on the internet! Or if anyone knows of any names of places that do work away/woofing, please let me know. I did see something on woofing about an eco-resort, but I have to pay to sign up just to look at where it is, so would rather some more info from others!

Vinaka :)

Have you looked at workaway and helpx.net sites. They both have some volunteer places in Fiji. I would recommend Vanua Levi and Taveuni. I did a helpx stay near Savusavu a few years back, it was more helping with gardens, and accommodation than kids but I think I saw a childrens volunteer site advertised on Viti Levu, - though I would prefer to be on Vanua Levi, I met someone who volunteered at Palmlea farm accommodation near Labasa and loved it, nice American couple own the place, I think it was through workaway ...
