Tropical Cyclone in FijiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Hi I have booked a stopover in Nadi and wondered if anyone knows how things are after tropical cyclone Gene hit the main island in January 08? I heard that people on the west of Viti Levu were evacuated to higher ground due to flooding. Does anyone know how the islands are recovering after this event and if travel is likely to be disupted in the coming months?
Check out fijitimes.com to keep up to date with what's happening in Fiji. I think Nadi got flooded again, but they should have it cleaned up by now. | 1
queens highway is free all busses are running - remoter areas like the interior of fiji has still access and water problems. fresh vegetables are a bit hard to find at the moment - imported is no problem ( in supermarkets), but those are a bit more expensive. | 2
I have made a few phone enquiries and found that most of the islands are back to normal, except that the weather is particularly overcast and wet in the wake of the cyclone. Satellite photos show that Gene is still spinning further south and there's plenty of cloud still hanging around from the tail, so I made the decision to postpone my trip a month or so purely to enjoy the Fijian weather. Hope that helps. | 3
