Viti Levu accommodation help

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Still trying to find THE place to spend a week in January '10. Am thinking about the Coral Coast. Can anyone help me out with a bit of advice? Have spent HOURS and HOURS on-line but just can't decide! Have checked out Crusoe's Retreat, as it seems out of the way. My criteria are a palm-fringed white sandy beach, coconut trees, you know, your typical Pacific paradise sort of place:):) On tripadvisor, though, some people say it's a rather weary place. Am also afraid as it's on the 'rainy' side of Viti Levu, that it will be even wetter that the eastern side of the coast in January. We'd like a quiet place, no need for lots of activities, but in an area where we can also take some interesting day trips and go diving as well. The bigger resorts in the area seem a bit too landscaped and pricey too (Wellesley, Navita), and Mango Bay (although the setting looks brilliant) a bit too backpackerish! Would like to keep it until $130 per night if possible. The Bedarra, although raved about on tripadvisor, seems too motelish - I'd like a bure if possible! Would REALLY appreciate some advice from anyone who's been there!!!! Thanks SO much!

Why the Coral Coast? It's almost guaranteed to be wetter than the Western side at that time of year - have you considered Yasawas?
What currency is your $130?

US $. The reason I thought the Coral Coast is because I read a number of posts from people who couldn't get out to the Yasawas at the time of year because the boat wasn't running (rough seas). Besides, we don't just want to do the sitting on the beach thing but would like to explore a bit in the jungle, but be able to come back at the end of the day and look out at the setting sun (weather permitting:):) Also, we're on our way home after 5 weeks travelling in NZ so would prefer to stay in Viti Levu rather than take another form of transportation from there. Does that make sense?

Have stayed at Crusoe's Resort but much prefer the Mamanuca islands.
The beach was OK but snorkelling was not great as fairly shallow out to the reef.
They did run free daily trips to a channel to snorkel which was good.
Badly twisted my ankle walking around the bluff to the next beach and could not walk for some days.
Getting there from Nadi was a bit of a problem, a taxi was cheaper than their transfer rates but we were very relieved when the taxi arrived to pick up up at the end of our stay and the driver was also very relieved that we were there to be picked up as he would probably have lost his job if we were not there.
Had a good boat trip into the mangrove swamp and you could go for a walk but probably just as much enjoyment walking around an island.
It was fine when we were there but it is more likely to get rain than the Mamanuca islands.

There is no jungle for exploring on the Coral Coast-if that's what you want head down to Kadavu.http://www.matava.com/

The thing to remember about rain in Fji

55% falls in the wet season
45% in the dry season.

plus there is no coral left to see on the so-called Coral Coast
