Volunteering in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi!

I stayed in Fiji for 3 weeks in October and likes the cultur and people so mutch that I would like to go back and do some voluntery work. As a socialworker that would of course be in a orpanidge or a school for disabled children. So my questions is:

Does anyone have any good ideas about throw which organization it would be a safe and good idea to go throw? I have found an organization cold "Involvment volunterrs" based in Melbourne. Have anyone had any experience of them? I´m guessing that it is not possible to go throw an organization based in Fiji?

Also I´m in Australia at the moment and would like to do the volunteering before I go back to Europe. And the only problem with that would be the wet season in Fiji! What is the weather and temperatur like in Nadi and Lautoka in februari - march? Is it very hot and humid? The weather in October was almost to warm for me! What would the temperature be like so that I would have an idea?

Thank you very mutch for your help!!!
Johanna

It will be hot and humid, but less so in Nadi/Lautoka than in Suva. But it is still worth the trip, it's not that bad. Just make sure you at least have an electric fan somewhere where you'll be staying, or buy one at the store if one isn't already there. Even a desk fan will help on a hot night.

Most social support agencies in Fiji are run by churches. I know of an orphanage (St Christopher's Home) run by Anglican nuns, for example.
If you feel you could work with a church, then contact the Australian branch of one - the most common in Fiji is Methodist (Uniting Church in Australia).
Most of them would be delighted to have a trained volunteer.

Thank you for your answer about the volunteering. Do you have any good ideas where I should start searching for a church and a orfanidge? I would be very intrested in finding a childrens home directly in sted of throw a organisation.

St Christopher's is the only listing under "Babies and Children's Homes" in the Fiji yellow pages ([see Link|http://www.yellowpages.com.fj/listing.aspx?name=&type=Babies%26+Children's+Homes&location=AnyLocation&parent=27207&trackback=-122])
I found this by googling St Christopher's.
