What to do...?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I'm taking a gap year and doing alot of travelling by myself. In between Central America and Australia I'll be stopping in Fiji for ten days in April and basically just don't know what I should do! I know it's a very short time, but I'm thinking of it as a mini break from lots of moving around. I want to relax, see some different islands, have a good time and meet nice people - preferably not a load of horrible immature drunks. So... don't know which island would be best. Any suggestions? I've heard Mango Bay is good?

If you want to do a bit more than spend all of your time 'relaxing' at beach resort kinds of places, consider combining Suva with Ovalau island and either Leleuvia of Caqalai island resorts (off east cost of Viti Levu). You'll see a lot of Fijian culture that way, travel distances are short (eg a 15 minute flight from Suva to Ovalau) and the cost of the resorts will probably be half of an equivalent standard in the Yasawas etc.

This is more or less the standard recommendation on this site for people with not a lot of time but with a desire to see something of the country.

One other possible bonus: since this area is (even only) slightly out of the main tourist areas it gets a lot fewer visitors. The people to do go there are likely to be more adventurous. I met met quite a few RTWers (myself being one at the time) in that area.

There are some photos on my BLOG.
