When is the best time to go to Fiji for snorkeling

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I am going to visit my daughter who recently moved to New Zealand and I would like to add on a snokeling trip to Fiji or some other island. It would like to miss the most extreme weather. I am a woman of 70 and I travel alone. I have snorkeled in the Caribbean, Malaysia, Egypt and the Maldives but I believe the coral around Fiji is still superb.
I have a limited budget.
I would appreciate any advice or information.
I wil be booking my trip with a travel agent in Nelson, New Zealand.

There is some great snorkeling round Fiji- beautiful corals and lots of fish. I did some amazing snorkeling round Kadavu, on the Great Astrolabe Reef, but there is even some very good stuff round the Yasawas (try Waya and Nanuya Balavu (Manta ray) islands), which are easy and cheap to access and have some decent budget accommodation. Cyclone season is the summer. You can get some stunning weather December- February, so don't totally rule it out as a travel option, but there is an increased risk of getting hit by severe storms or cyclones at this time. The temperature is also quite hot and sticky. March- April might work well for you- the weather in Fiji should be settled (though of course weather can never be guarenteed!) and NZ should also still be sunny and pleasant.

The Best time is whenever you can go.

2

January can have heavy rain (and floods) esp if associated with the cyclones.
Severe cyclones are rare but mostly around January.

April, May and Early June are great for snorkeling. The rainy season is gone but the water is still nice and warm. September and October are also really nice.

Water can be chilly in July and August if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water. December, January and February have great snorkeling, but more rain and jelly fish.
