working holiday?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi LP'ers, looking for a bit of advice. I'm working on a travel series for TV about working holidays around the world. As in short term seasonal work under 6 months. is it possible for foreigners to get temp/seasonal resort or bar work in Fiji or is that simply impossible?

Would a better option be looking for volunteer positions? I'm keen to explore this angle but have to convince the powers that be.. ;)

Cheers!

Basically I would hope they wouldn't try, as there are too many Fijians out of work who need those jobs. As for volunteers, unless they go for a year or more with a recognised agency, they would need to meet their own expenses.

Thanks for the reply Ozzie, I have been pushing for a volunteer angle, looks like we'd be running with this idea if it happens - cheers.

No such thing in Fiji yet as a working holiday. As ozzieg said, we have a very high percentage of unemployment. We do not have a dole system, so out of work here means, depending on your relations for survival. Volunteer work may also be a problem as Volunteers that come to Fiji are very well known organisations..
However, as you are doing a travel TV series, I'm sure you will find lots of other interesting aspects that may be of help to you.

What about visas? Whatever angle you choose do you need to make sure the country will give visas for such a thing and the person isn't doing the work (illegally) on a tourist visa?

Guess there will always be people trying to do things illegally. However for $2.50 (minimum wage) it's hardly worth the effort. Yes you could apply for work permit, but believe me it wont be easy, unless you specialize in some thing the country needs.
Good luck anyway.
