Yasawas to Mamanucas

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

hi - we will be on the Yasawa Flyer coming into Denarau but will miss our connection to the malolo cat by 15 minutes - need to get out to Plantation Island after the flyer arrives at 5.30pm ...any suggestions?

I think the Flyer stops at Beachcomber and that is sometimes used as a transit point between the Yasawas and the rest of the Mamanucas, though it is not really close to Plantation. Anyway, ask your resort if they could pick you up there and if it would work out cheaper than from Denarau.

Thanks Laszlo - yes we've done that before but they want $500fj for that trip and more from Denarau! I was trying to get it cheaper - we know a local that has a long boat but he's not answering his phone - its not for another 8 weeks so I'll try to track him down - crikeys Fiji is getting very expensive! I will second that, we have a holiday at Treasure Island that has just had to be rebooked due to Cyclone Winston.
The original cost for 8 nights was just on NZ$ 6000, when re booking the airfare had increased by NZ$1761 for the two of us and Treasure wanted another $1998 as well.
NZ$9759 for 8 nights at Treasure does include Business class flights and helicopter transfers but it sure has increased a lot over the 20 holidays we have had in Fiji in the last 13 years.

Yep - I've been going to Fiji for many years and the last 2 years have been terribly expensive - I'm worried for the Fijians that they'll price themselves out of the tourism market....for us it's the 3 hours it takes to get us there that makes it an easy holiday

Unfortunately Fiji is turning to high-end tourism, and most of the old budget hotels have been closed down, apart from two in Nadi, one near the airport, and one in Suva (the only ones I know, there might be more but not in Nadi anyway, not below $60/night). I was shocked on my last visit in 2013, prices had gone up more than three-fold since my last visit in 2002. Before that, things only ever increased by a few dollars, over a period of 14 years, so I had factored in a relatively low cost increase to my travel budget and found I didn't have nearly enough cash with me. A lot of the lower-end place don't like credit cards.

I wish it was a 3-hour hop for me, but it isn't, it's closer to 22 hours.

Very sad that they are cranking the prices up.

30+ hrs for me to Fiji, so its not that I'd visit often, but still, it will be wiped off my future plans if they almost doubling the prices.

Is this price increase happening only/mostly on Viti Levu, or is Vanua Levu and Taveuni (among other areas, like Kadavu, Lau, etc) getting the price crank?

jvainio - I didn't get off Viti Levu this time, so have no information on price rises elsewhere. But I suspect they more than likely have gone up at the same rate. The price I quoted is in Fiji $, which makes it a tad more affordable. In Nadi and Suva the room rates in the lower-end hotels I stayed in were $60 F$, for the same room I normally got for $20 F$.
