Guam April 27-30, 2007

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Guam

Hi everybody here,

I am probably going to Guam in the end of next week on a weekend trip (I'm currently living in Osaka, so it's not too far) but I don't know too much about the island. I guess it's kind of a tropical paradise with nice beaches and some tropical landscapes (which I'd enjoy), famous for duty-free shopping (actually not to much interested in) and having party nights at the beach (who could say no to that). But are there any options for doing this on a low budget style? I think it's easy to have a lot of fun having a holden credit card, but why not for a student?

I think the first and most important question is about accomodation. Is there anything below Hilton or Marriott? I just need a hostel, a bamboo hutch at the beach or anything like that. Or maybe sharing a room with some other traveller being on Guam at the same time (anbody here??) could be an option.

And another question: Is it right that Guam is kind of a hub to the other Pacif islands around (well, whatever "around" means in kilometers in the pacific)? Do you have any information about flights from Guam to other locations?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Markus

As for Guam, there are certainly cheaper accomodations. But many of the smaller and less expensive hotels don't have beach front. We just used it to got through.

Yes it is a hub- Continental Air Mike flies to all the other Micronesian islands via Guam. Don't quite know what info you would be looking for, but the flights generallyaren't cheap. Check out the Continental website for all you would want to know about the flights. It might be that you could fly to Palau, for example, for not much different than Guam, but the flights aren't that convenient, so if you are doing a weekend, don't know what you have in mind.

Thanks for the information! Well I checked Continental's fares, and they are incredible! For that money I can almost go back to Germany from Japan. I read something about a very inexpensive so-called "Visit Micronesia Airpass" but could not find any website with booking informations. Maybe it's obsolete now?

Concerning hotels, good to know that there are cheaper options. Actually I don't need a sea-view hotel, I have to problem with walking some minutes to the beach and spending the money I save in accomodation for something different.

Actually, I have 4 full days in Guam. So do you have any recommendation to visit apart from shopping malls and hotel beaches? Somebody wrote about the unspoiled, native south region of the island. Is it possible to spend a night and do some hiking there for example? What about ancient relics? A read aout some stone pillars. Well, there's not much to find about Guam in the web.

Thanks!

I've never really spent time on Guam- it was simply a stopover on the way to other islands. Here is a link to the local newspaper- always an amusing read Pacific Daily News. Try searching this branch- there have been discussions about what to see and do on Guam.

And yes- I warned you about the Air Mike prices- outrageous. The airpass comes and goes- but with 4 days it would be really hard anyway. Not that the distances are that great- but there is very limited trips.

Ah...there ARE very limited trips back and forth between the islands.
