Kiribas Visas etc

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Kiribati

right, The Kiribati consulate in Sydney tell me that customs in Kirivati do not like one way tickets into Kiribati. Which means If I come, I will have a headache in Sydney.

I was thinking of coming to Kiribati and leaving via Tonga.

Do you think i would have to pre-book my flight out of Kiribati? say to the Solomons before arrival?

Harry I've read your posts and clearly you are keen on the idea of a Kiribati visit. Having said that, under no circumstances should you consider arriving at Bonriki without a return airfare ticket. Solomons? Forget it, unless they use different rules. Return ticket based on Australia (your profile says you are Australian) is the only option. If you show up in Kiribati without a ticket out, then you won't pass GO. Same with most countries these days I would have thought.

Thanks, but it's not a "visit" per se, but I have two serious job opportunities.

The return airfare is the thing. Can I show up with a pre booked ticket to somewhere else?

I would have thought that the criteria would be "onward" ticket, as there is no reason why Kiribati Immigration would care where you went to next (that's not to say they're uncaring though!).

You may have an issue if you intend entering on a "visitor's" visa and then applying for / obtaining work - I would have imagined that AusAid or Ozvol positions would be recruited outside the country, and you would then enter on an appropriate work visa. If you want to do your own private fact-finding visit first, why wouldn't you have an onward / return ticket booked?

I haven't studied flights for a while, but back when I flew that sector the only ways in or out of Tarawa were with Air Nauru via Nauru or Fiji, or with Air Marshall Island, via MI or Fiji. I am not aware of any flights direct to Tonga - this may have changed, but it does not strike me as a logical routing.

Few points based on experience. 'Job opportunities' won't work with Kiribati immigration authorities. If they let you in and you gain employment the employer will likely get fined for their efforts. Been there, done that! You'll likely require a letter of employment first. Same with PNG and other places. Secondly, I currently work in Asia, have a valid Work Visa and still I was not allowed to depart Australia recently (small holiday break) without a return ticket home. Hope this helps.

I suppose the most extreme example was when Dr Haneef tried to leave on a one-way ticket to India a few weeks ago - although now he has been "allowed" to leave by Andrews et al!

I left Kiribati by sea but could not get visa without flight out. So I paid full fare return flight and got money for return leg back afterwards...

If the Ausaid one works, then i won't be worrying about the visa's. If the other one works, I may have to come over as a tourist and have a chat with them.

I have absolutely not intentions of going there and THEN looking for work.

I am just saying, that If I go that far, I would like to go over to one of the other nations while I have the chance.
