Traditional Villages in Kiribati

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Kiribati

Hi all!

I need to find some traditional villages in Kiribati and/or the outer islands.
I'm currently contacting a few people in Kiribati through email, and one person recommended we go to a village in Abemama (maybe the one on Abatiku).

The profile of a traditional village that I'm looking for is one in which the villagers maintain a largely traditional way of life on a day-to-day basis. In particular, I'm looking for one that has unique customs regarding pregnancy, childbirth, child-rearing, etc. Also, I if the village has any handicapped children (either physically or mentally) and how raising them might differ from other children.

I know that I'm looking for a very specific kind of village. I'm basically grasping at straws here. But I have full faith in the forum here! Can any of you help me? Or refer me to someone who might provide me with further assistance?

Please leave comments or email me at munchie_86@naver.com

Thanks a million, all.

I think that if you made it to any of the outer islands in Kiribati, you would only find traditional villages.

Generally, the northern islands have a slightly different culture from the southen islands, but I don't know if there's a big enough difference to matter with your topics of interest. I doubt that the customs in Makin (furthest north) are so very different from Arorae (furthest south).

Good luck!

I agree with kiriguy.

When I visited Marakei island about three years ago I found the society to be friendly and the villages were traditional in the sense you're talking. Also, there was one guesthouse-like structure in Rawannawi, the village nearest the landing strip. Like most of the outer islands, Marakei was gorgeous.
