never been there

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Marshall Islands

has anyone been to the island recently was wondering what would be the best time to travel there are what are the sites to see and are there any walks that you can do that aren't to hilly, any places of interest; how big is the island, just basic information please

Just curious- why the Marshalls?

1

i don't really know was just trying to get a bit of info of some nice places to travel. have you been there

2

No- not to the Marshalls. Generally you see more people headed a bit further west- to the Federated States of Micronesia (Kosrea, Pohnpei, Chuuk (if you are a wreck diver, Yap) or to Palau. Where would you be starting?

I only ever met a handful of people who have been to the Marshalls.
Not one has liked the country, and all have suggested to put it to the very end of my list of places to visit.
There may just be a reason... though I'd still be interested anyway.
ASFAIK, there are almost no"sights" to speak of (but one doesn't nornmally go to this region for sightseeing), hills would certainly not be an obstacle to walking, and it's not "the island" but "the islandS". Being in Micronesia, they are obviously not big.
The old LP and Moon guides to Micronesia cover the Marshalls in fair detail.

Passed through the Marshalls a while ago. Stayed for 5 days as I had to change planes anyway. Went diving for a day which was okay. The most spectacular dives (wrecks, esp. an aircraft carrier) can be found in Bikini atoll. You have to go on an organised one-week trip, which starts at around 2700 US from D-U-D (flights, dives and full board included but no dive gear). I didn't for out that much.
Had a look around D-U-D which isn't too spectacular. The smaller islands/atolls in the lagoon make for nice day trips.
Also hired a moped for a day form a private person. Went all the way to the western end of the atoll which sometimes isn't wider than 6 or 7 meters! Certainly not hilly.
Micronesia is much nicer: historic sites in Pohnpei and Kosrae, great dives in Chuuk (wrecks) and Yap (Mantas) and a few walks. Palau is great for diving as well.
Northern Mariana islands have historic sites from WW II, quite nice to have a look around (Saipan, Tinian, Rota).
Enjoy your trip ;-)

This thread is a little old but wotthehell.

I spent two weeks in Majuro. Others have mentioned Flame Tree. If you can afford a little more the RRE hotel is worthwhile and close to a bar, supermarket and bank. Hell, there's even an Ace Hardware for all the essentials. The only quality hotel in town is the Marshall Islands Resort. You can buy very cheap groceries at Payless supermarket which is even cheaper than Hawaii. There must be some government subsidy going on. Cabs are dirt cheap but you have to share. Beer is cheap.

There are no hills and no best time to go. The weather is the same all year apart from more rain in summer. The only two things to do are fishing and diving. There are two dive schools and the fishing boats are cheap because they aren't very big. You can catch marlin, tuna, mahi mahi etc. The diving is all reef not wreck but that makes it ideal for underwater photographers. The best activity in Majuro is photography. Everywhere you can see signs of how too much American money can ruin paradise.

If you only stay in Majuro 5 days would be plenty.
