Fiji - worth it?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Micronesia, Federated States of

Hey there

My sister and I (mid 20's) are looking for a mid Australian winter break on the cheap and with the crazy flight prices to Fiji at the moment we're considering a week there. Looking at anytime between May-July for 7-10 days.
Don't want to be near boatloads of cruise and resort goers, prefer off the beaten track a bit and just want to unwind on the beach for awhile.

If anyone has any suggestions we'd love to hear it!
Thanks

If self catering is alright with you, I would suggest you catch a bus outside the airport(depending on your arrival time) and head to the Supermarket not that far north of the airport to pick up some supplies.Catch another bus and keep heading north to the turn off for Ellington Wharf. Get a taxi to the wharf -from here you can take a boat to Nananu-i-ra Island(it's best to arrange this with your accommodation) - there are several small places to stay with kitchen facilities (Betham's or MacDonald's are a couple) right on a lovely beach. You will be off the beaten track without too many people around. If you want to split your time you could also have a look at Voli Voli, a little more upscale place in the same area but on the mainland - you will pass it on the way to Ellington Wharf.

the local cruises. Captain Cook, around Fiji are not boatloads of people like the massive cruise liners, and you cover a lot of territory, probably 70 people max. I've done several. you are in a different spot twice a day, the beaches are better than Nananu-i-ra (I've been there once to stay and once on a 7 day cruise for a short visit). I live in Fiji and know the beaches, some a light sand, some are dark sand and some in between. The best beach in Fiji is Natadola beach, That is where the Intercontinental is, not that you want to stay there, but the beach is a public beach. Do a Google to check it out. My other choice for an interesting spot is Leleuvia, on the east side of Viti Levu. The Beach House is also another good place to stay and you could do some day trips to other places by bus.
