Thailand - Nukuoro ... what's the best way to go? Bangkok - Manila ... Palau? ... Nukuoro? Has anyone done it and can give information about schedules and prices?
Thanks a lot

LOL ! - You could fly Manila - Guam - Pohnpei and then wait for the boat that goes there once every few months.

Yes, I had to google to find out where it was, I had never heard of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nukuoro

My geography lesson for the day!

After some digging in the internet, I think that it would be useful to fly to Pohnpei (Micronesia) and then take a ship to Nukuoro. However, Pohnpei can be reached only via Honolulu. Going Bangkok - Honolulu - Pohnpei is a VERY long and expensive way.

3

No, the Continental Island Hopper that starts in Honolulu ends up in Guam where you can connect to many places. However, the Continental leg will be very expensive as they are the only airline that flies that route.

4

You take the island hopper from Guam to Honolulluwhich goes south and stops in Pohnpei., also Chuuk first, then Pohnpei, then Kosrai, To get to Nukuro you then, as someone said, wait months and months for the ship. Or you can call and ask when the ship is scheduled to go. It will be approximate. You have to go the whole way down to Kapingamarangi, and will stop in Nukuro for an afternoon, if I remember correctly. It is a spectacular adventure, with stops in places you can only find on google earth. It takes about 10 days.

Curious- why Nukuro? It is beautiful- a Polynesian island in Micronesia. The ship not so- you have to bring your own food, nothing available on board- it is a working ship with pigs and motors and school children, in equal numbers. The toilets work, sometimes. You get on and off over the edge pirate fashion- rope ladders to small tenders. We saw pirates and pigs feeding in the sea and islands with 80 inhabitants- and coconut liquor that will leave you reeling.

The other trip which sound amazing leaves from either Pohnpei or Chuuk and goes through the outer islands over to Yap Proper. On my list of must do's before I die.

5

Oh- cost. Once you get to Pohnpei the field ship is really really cheap. And worth every penny. I don't remember how much but less than a good meal for two in Denver CO.

6

The MS Voyager is leaving Pohnpei on January 5th for an emergency run to Sapwuahfik, Nukuoro, and Kapingamarangi to bring relief supplies. The islands were heavily hit by a tidal surge in early December. 90% of their taro crops are estimated damaged by saltwater.

7

Oh- terrible news Hadn't heard about the surge. Wonder why it took them so long to get an emergency trip out.

8

News of the flooding didn't reach Pohnpei until the 17th. The Voyager was in Chuuk and didn't get back to Pohnpei till the 19th.

Here's an article about it: http://www.pacificmagazine.net/news/2008/12/19/tidal-surges-cause-massive-damage-in-fsm

The report of the planned emergency trip was posted on the FSM Government Web site.

Blue Mountain- curious minds want to know- why Nukuro? If if it not specific but just a very isolate and beautiful place, which is true, you might consider some of the outer islands of Yap which are likewise isolated and beautiful and has a plane which flies out fairly regularly. Much easier to get to, although still very very much off the beaten path.

Hi there, sorry for the delay in responding, I had no access to my PC for sometime. Thanks to everybody for their comments. Concerning going to Nukuoro, I have tried to contact the FSM Visitors Board at fsminfo@visit-fsm.org as well as the Pohnpei Visitors Bureau at PohnpeiVB@mail.fm but so far, no answer. So there seems to be no any regular ship to Nukuoro? I do not have unlimited time, so I am dependent upon reliable transport ... can't afford to get stuck somewhere for 6 months. I have never been in the Pacific and I thought about Nukuoro because, being a polynesian outlet, it has an interesting history and language.

11

Uh...it was a beautiful place and a woman working for us had family there so we had connections and besides we were on the boat for a number of other reasons. But I'm not sure it would be necessary to go quiet that far for your first entrance into the Pacific. From Thailand we went to Manila and then your next stop is Palau and then Yap. You might want to look at some of the outer islands and see if any peak your interest.

12

uh...go quite that far....sorry.

13

Thanks, 5Waldos for your ongoing interest in my fascination with Nukuoro. There is one other reason why I want to go there. In the 19th century, people from Nukuoro produced some of the most wonderful statues I have seen in my life. Nothing is left on the island nowadays but there are about 20 of these statues in museums around the world. Just wondered what people are like who, in the middle of nowhere, created statues of such high artistic value.

Of this I have never heard. There is certainly nothing of that left. It is beautiful and quite Polynesian. Would love to know more about them.

15

5Waldos - the Outer Islands of Yap are not so easy to get to either! Spent 5 days on Fais in September and was VERY lucky to be able to get there. The boat that usually services the Outer Islands was broken down and hadn't run for many months and PMA flights were few and far between, especially to Woleai, due to rising fuel prices. Obviously they go more regularly than the boat but unless you can afford to wait around for a long time in Yap you are likely to be disappointed.

16

Why is this not a surprise? The boat was about the worst trip I have encountered. It is still easier to get there than to Nukuro. Another interesting possibility is to take the boat from Chuuk to Yap- although my guess is that this is not regular either. Hey- It is Micronesia- on island time. You gotta love it.
