Travel from Guam to Chuuk by boat? Moving to Chuuk

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Micronesia, Federated States of

Hi. We might move to Chuuk next year and plan to check it out this summer. I have three questions I hope you can help us with:

  1. The cheapest airfare we've found from Guam to Chuuk is almost $800. Is there anything cheaper? Is there any way to get to Chuuk from Guam by boat, such as a ferry or a cargo boat?

  2. Inexpensive hotels in Guam: we've seen some for $50 a night with negative & positive reviews. Does anyone have a good recommendation for staying 4 nights in Guam (we are an older couple)?

  3. We've seen the comments on places like the Trukstop hotel, but our stay in Chuuk will probably be one month. Is it possible to rent an apartment for a month? What would it cost?

In addition, we have lots of 'moving to/living in Chuuk' questions like daily cost of living, housing etc., but extensive internet searching has turned up very little on that sort of information, so we don't expect much--smile.

Thanks!

United is the only airline flying that route so take a look at their web to see what's the cheaper fare you find for your travel dates.

Truk Stop does offer apartments, and most ex-pats in Chuuk live there. His and Hers stores also has new apartment buildings, but it may be difficult to contact them from outside Chuuk. Your best bet is to call Truk Stop, or the Chuuk tourism office and see if they can help you. There isn't a large ex-pat community in Chuuk (other than missionaries and international volunteers) so you won't find much info about living there.

Ditto on United, it's the only way to get to/from Chuuk.

I've stayed at the Ramada in Guam. I think it was $60 a night and the room was fine.

Thank you to both of you for your responses! So quick.

The comment on the apartments and Ramada were especially helpful.
We will call the Trukstop hotel and see what they say about apartments, and will also check with Ramada about Guam. Thanks again. Very encouraging.
