Traveling in FSMCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Micronesia, Federated States of
I am planning an extended jaunt around the globe and FSM is a possibility for my first stop. I understand that FSM is not cheap but there seems to be a dearth of information floating around. Has anyone tried camping on any of the beaches? Is it possible? I would like to do some diving but I would rather not auction off vital organs in order to pay for it. I would like to find a dive shop and work out some kind of bulk deal where I pay a lump sum for a considerable amount of dives (which may include certified courses). Any dive shop recommendations would be most appreciated. Has anyone experienced secluded islands off the main tourist haunts? I would like to do some island hopping but do not have a good idea about how plausible this would be or how much it might cost. Bottom line: I would like to have a prolonged stay in FSM. I am not a millionaire (unfortunately). I do have some cash to spend but some times it is fun to see how far you can go and what you can squeeze out of an experience for as little money as possible. I am not cheap I just hate throwing money away. And I always get the feeling that once you arrive somewhere there is always a way to make it work. Feelin free to correct any misconceptions. And I am not hell bent on going to FSM. If anyone has any suggestions on another Pacific Island chain I should experience I am all ears.
The 4 island groups of the FSM are quite different and cover an area in the pacific about the size of the USA. There is a lot of information about Pohnpei here, some about Kosrae and Chuuk, and a bit on Yap. Same country, but each very different. So, look up the islands and see if any appeal and go from there. | 1
Secluded islands- wonderful. There is a ship which goes from Chuuk (pretty sure it starts there) to Yap, through the outer islands of both. Although I haven't seen any prices, it is primarily for locals and would be really basic, but fasinating. And most likely really inexpensive- but you have to bring your own everything. There is another field ship which leaves from Pohnpei down to Kapingamarangi, stopping at a number of small islands. Not a lot of time at each stop, but a wonderful trip. You would visit places that rarely see outsiders with NO tourist facilities. | 2
