yap, 1st week of feb, prebook a room?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Micronesia, Federated States of

I prefer to just arrive, find a convenient bed for the first night, then check around in person the next day for the place I like the most. Is that feasible? Any chance there wont be any available rooms?

Thanks for any input.

cheers

No response. Guess I'll follow through then with my accustomed trust in serendipity, which hasnt failed me yet. Yap looks nice, I'm excited.

Okay, so I'll answer my own question.

Pre-booking isnt necessary. There is a line on the immigration card asking where you'll stay, which I left blank, but the official at the airport did require an answer. He suggested ESA? Manta Ray? so I said ESA. Outside there were drivers with signs from both those hotels meeting booked guests. I asked the ESA guy if they had a room & he said sure. There were taxis there too had there not been any hotel drivers.

ESA, as it turns out, is a fine little hotel & I stayed my week with them. Very clean, great location, reasonable room rate, staff unfailingly friendly & helpful.

I dont imagine there would ever be a problem just showing up on the island. Their biggest event of the year, Yap Day, is coming up soon & none of the hotels expected to be maxed out.

Unique & delightful little island.

Good to know.

Fiji has changed it's relaxed attitude to incoming tourists and now you need to enter your accommodation on the landing card. I never pre-book anything when I go to Fiji and not having pre-booked accommodation annoyed the immigration officer. Things sure change, I hope Yap doesn't.
