Yap, car seat for 3 yr old?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Micronesia, Federated States of
Hi folks, We will be traveling to Yap with our 3 yr old son, staying for about 2 months for work. It seems like I dont need to bring a carseat for my 3 yr old, as travel by car seems likely to be at low speeds and a car seat may just seem out of place. Any thoughts?
We lived in Palau and had a car seat. I suspect that the ex-pats will have car seats. And some of the travel by car (assuming you will be in Yap Proper) is not all that slow- there are some real roads and decent speeds. What a great opportunity- have a great time. Have you been there before? | 1
I was in Yap this past June. The roads are in poor enough shape that it is quite difficult to go faster than 25 mph. Will you be staying at Manta Ray Bay? If so, you might check whether they have a child seat for their van, in case you decide to go on any of their excursions. | 2
Thanks for the replies. No, havent been to Yap before. But lived in other parts of the Pacific and visited Palau and Guam. | 3
I don't think there is a lot you can do in the islands that is going to look too strange. And even if it is not common, nobody is going to look twice at you. I wasn't thinking about taxis- they probably won't have seatbelts in the back so maybe the car seat won't work. I have good friends who raised their kids in Yap for quite some time (10 years? ) and if you would like, pm me and I can try to get you in touch with them. | 4
mc1895: People are so friendly on Yap that they might ask you about the stroller, but it certainly wouldn't be a problem. One issue I found with walking around Colonia, however, is the absence of sidewalks. You'll have to walk on the side of the road and keep an eye out for traffic. That being said, people drove quite slowly and there was never any problems. Re: taxis, several that I rode in didn't have seatbelts in the back (because they were covered up by a slipcover, or they were just missing). Hadn't thought of that with regard to the childseat. | 5
