Reporting from Nauru - any story ideas and advice to contacts?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Nauru
I am a Danish video journalist (www.tvjournalist.dk) who is planning a reporting trip to Nauru, hoping to depart in the beginning of 2009. I am mainly interested in reporting about the diabetes situation, but am also looking for other topics to cover, such as their current situation; how does a country get back on its feet after loosing their main source of income (and will they?) , the refugee camp, their relationship with Australia. I need to produce three or four smaller segments to be able to get funded, so any other interesting stories, beside the diabetes story are on my mind. I have done some research already, but the little information I find is more than one year old, and the contact information is useless. Any tips to officials and media in Nauru or Australia I can contact, that can get me on the right path would be great. For those who have visited the island; any names of people you befriended, that might be able to help me, while I'm there? I am also interested in learning more about the whole issue of going there, and to learn how people would receive a - friendly - reporter. Any advice? Your input will be highly appreciated as I have currently no network in this part of the world. I'll of course post a link to my finished videos once they have been produced.
