How serious is the wild dog problem on Nauru? I'll be there a week, doing lots of walking/photographing. Is the problem serious enough to suggest getting a rabies vaccination? Thanks for any advice.
This probably comes too late for you, but maybe someone else will find this helpful later. I'm also travelling to Nauru later this year and was worrying about the same thing. I found this map on the website of World Health Organization, according to which rabies is not endemic in the South Pacific: https://www.who.int/rabies/Presence_dog_transmitted_human_Rabies_2014.png | 1
Hi Vallabi, Thanks for your reply. I did travel to Nauru (and Kiribati) last year. The dogs on Nauru can be aggressive, but it's fairly easy to avoid them - just be careful if hitchhiking on open road. Mostly they stay around the beach areas. It's also a good idea to carry a few stones to discourage them if they get too close. Altogether, though, nothing to really worry about. Nauru doesn't have many must-see sights, but is a fascinating place to understand what happened in their phosphate boom-bust, and also, of course, the on-going refugee crisis. I stayed at the excellent (but expensive) Budapest Hotel, and highly recommend The Bay restaurant for dinner, and Capelle and Partners for breakfast/bakery. | 2
