Accommodation on the Loyalty Islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi there,

Heading to New Caledonia for a couple weeks over New years and was hoping to visit the Loyalty Islands for a week or so. Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap/average accommodation on the islands themselves?

Kind regards

On Mare, the only accommodation I would recommend is Nengone village. It's 4 years since we stayed there & at that time it was looking really tired. It is now under new management, so, may well have undergone a refurbishment. It is in a wonderful position & as avid snorkelers we couldn't have asked for better but even 4 years ago it was expensive for what you got. Mare, is an extremely beautiful island, but is ( or was) sadly lacking any decent budget accommodation.
Lifou, however, is a different story, there are a few types of accommodation to choose from. We always stay at Drehu Village, but once again this isn't "cheap". Just along the bay from Drehu Village is Chez Jeanette - this is very basic accommodation with, I think 1 family gite & 3 smaller gites. They have communal kitchen & bathroom facilities. They are right on Chateaubriand Bay & are within 30min. walking distance of a supermarket, bank etc. The owners seem very friendly & the accommodation & grounds look clean. If you're not after luxury & don't mind self catering I would consider Chez Jeanette. There are a couple of other hotels to choose from, but once again, nothing is cheap in Lifou either.
Hope this has helped.

On Ouvéa, you can find good camping, especially in the south (Lekiny Camping for example, where you have also the only dive club of the island, and they rent bicylce). Once in Nouméa, you can have the (small) list of the accomodation in the Loyautés.
