Adice as to snorkeling on a cruise

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

We are avid snorklers and there is a cruise on Oceania Cruise Lines that goes to a number of ports for 8-12 hours and I need to know if most of them have quality snorkeling. We have been snorkeling in Asia lately:Bunaken, Wakatobi, Togean Islans, Similians and Phi Phi off Thailand and redand and Prehentans off Malaysian peninsula. We will not take the cruise at the cost if the snorkeling is not first rate. That is where I need help.
The cruise begins in Papette and then on to Bora Boro, Apia, Pago Pago, Lautoka, Fiji, Suva, Fiji, Luqanville, Vanatatu, Noumea, New Caladonia, Isle of Pines, New Caledonia, Bay of Islands, NZ, Tauranga, NZ and ending in Auckland.
It would cost us 2 years of vacations and it has trips in Jan, Feb, and March so weather may be a factor.
Can some of you clarify the quality of the snorkeling in 5-10 feet depths if you have visied any of these locations in the past year because bleaching occurs so fast.
THANKS.

Unless you have 24 hours to get away to the islands or to the north or east coasts of Viti Levu, you can forget about snorkelling, especially around Suva or Lautoka, in Fiji.
Lots of great snorkelling in the Yasawas and other areas though.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter_n_Margaret; can you actaully find quality snorkeling in Bay of Islamnds and or Yauranga, NZ? If so I would be out of luck on 3 of 9. Are either of the Fiji stops or Vanuatu far better than the other stops the ship makes so that we would be missing the highligh stops??
Thanks again.

P&M; Can you comment on if the weather for snorkelers i.e. rough seas from winds, heavy rains are more prevalent in Jan., Feb. or March.

Can't advise on the other stops Ashley.
Snorkelling is generally better away fron the wet season when run off can spoil the visibility around larger islands. So avoid November to April, if possible. And pollution around larger towns will always be present.

Cheers,
Peter
