Camping, car seats and kids?

Hi all, we're off on a new adventure soon and are looking for some insider info! Were hearing to new caledonia in July for two weeks and were thinking of hiring a car and staying at different camp sites around the place. Has anyone done this with two littlies (4 and 18 mths)? Any tips? Are kiddy car seats compulsorary?
