Car Hire Grand Terre

Hi just wondering if anyone has any recent experience in car hire on Grande Terre. Am hoping to hire a car for about 5_7 days to do a camping tour of the main isle in late April this year.. We have Aussie car licence. Do we need international? Any ideas of what I may expect to pay and petrol costs. We are hoping to drive to the Hienghene area, explore that area and then back to Noumea. Also hoping to visit Isle des Pins OR one of the Loyaltys. Anyone with any great camping site tips would love to hear
