Car rental + air pass experiences?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi,

We will be travelling to NC over Christmas and New Year's. Having already sorted all our accommodation, I am trying to sort out my flights to Mare and Ouvea.

Does anyone has any experience with the New Caledonia Air Pass and knows where to buy it?

Additionally, do you have any recommendations for car rentals on Ile des Pins, Mare, Ouvea and Noumea?

Thank you.

The only thing I can help you with is car rental in Noumea. We booked with Avis and were able to drop the car at the airport at no extra charge making it a very reasonable rate. We had a very early flight and stayed at the Tontoutel Hotel next to the airport so we wouldn't have a middle of the night departure from Noumea.

Just some additional information for would-be renters. The intl. companies have steep rates (usually over 4000 XFP/day incl. taxes). The Lonely Planet mentioned companies (AB location and Point Rouge) have in the meantime almost caught up with these rates. If you plan a weeklong rent it's worth to check local companies (e.g. locagm) which only work on-the-fly at the domestic airport (Magenta) where you can get 7 days for 3000/day including unlimited kms.
There service last week was ok and saved me a lot of money. Bus to/from intl. airport 400 XFP but only works 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. If your flight leaves before 8 a.m. you'll have to stay at Tontoutel for 8500 XFP up
