Dining in Noumea, Ile de Pines

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Where are good places to eat in Noumea and the Ile de Pines?

A variety of places for different price ranges would be good.

Does Le Roof have good quality food or are you paying just for the location?

Thanks.

When we were in Noumea we self catered to help with our budget and only ate out a few times. We stayed in the Baie des Citrons area and enjoyed our meals at the Fiesta Restaurant (good selection and reasonable prices) and the Texas Grill (steak at reasonable prices but menu only in French). We also had lunch and dinner at Pete's Place - budget prices - Pete is an ex-pat from the US and his menu has more western choices. All these places are on the main road across from the beach. Don't know if all these places are still there as it was 2006 when we were there. Can't help with Le Roof - you might want to check tripadvisor to see if any reviews have been posted.

OK:
Anse Vata: Fun Beach - good location, reasonable prices and very entertaining Maitre 'D
Snack Ulysse - good range, cheap prices
Rimba - probably the pick of the cheaper joints on Anse Vata. Has the usual burger offerings as well as a range of Asian dishes
Hotel Le Lagon - does a reasonably priced continental breakfast
The Italian restaurant across the road from Hotel Le Lagon is only just OK. I wouldn't go back.
Casa Italia - I wish I could tell you about this but after making the hike there, arriving at 6.38pm and asking for a table for 2, we were told "The restaurant opens at 7". No, "would you like to come in and sit down anyway, maybe have a drink while you are waiting". It was left to us to stand around in the carpark for another 15+ minutes and then try again. We decided to take our francs elsewhere.

In the semi-circular range of shops at La Promenade, Anse Vata:
the Vietnamese restaurant isn't that crash hot. I found a black hair about two feet long in one of my rice paper rolls.
L'Etrave - makes GREAT coffee but beware of the prices. The exact same order (2 x long blacks) consumed at the same time and sitting in the same chairs on three consecutive days were charged at three different prices!
The boulangerie / patisserie next to L'Etrave is to die for. Their range of breads, croissants and pastries is large but make sure you try one of their chocolate eclairs.

Baie des Citrons:
Astrolabe - not cheap but probably the top of the range at BdC
The 3 Brewers - the beer ain't that great, and outside of happy hour its really expensive, but the restaurant upstairs has surprisingly good food for the prices. The steaks were great.

Le Roof - a local gourmand told us that it's overpriced and the food isn't great. His 3 picks were:
Astrolabe
Casa Italia
a little restaurant operating out of a house at the Le Roof end of Anse Vata beach (down the road to the hippodrome). It's hugely popular with the locals and you MUST have a reservation to have any chance of getting in but sorry, I can't remember the name.

The restaurant to which speedyturtle refers is Le Miretti Gascan & it is supurb. On our last trip to Noumea we dined there twice. Their duck breast is to die for & their seafood brouchettes are huge. The service is friendly, the decore is probably in need of a revamp but the food more than makes up for the surroundings. I would suggest you make a reservation, as this seems to be where the locals dine.

Yep, that's it - Le Miretti Gascan. Definitely popular with the locals.
