Getting around in NC

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hey there!

I am heading off to New Caledonia from Auckland in a couple of days time, which has been quite a spontaneous decision.
I have never been there before, and now I am planning on how to get around (by public transport) and where to spend the nights (I will be travelling with backpack and tent, as I'm on a budget).
I have six days, starting and ending in Nouméa. Of course I want to see as much of this interesting place as I can...has anybody ever been there and can give me some tips at first hand?
That would be great, thank you very much :-)

I am an outdoors fan, so I quite like tramping, swimming etc. ;-)

Buses get you to most places on the Grande Terre and are good for long stretches, but they are also infrequent so for shorter hops hitching is a good option and quite easy in NC.
There are many cheap, idyllic campsites especially in the NE of the island, and the hiking trails can be beautiful and uncrowded - in fact I never met another hiker there!;-)

You can also consider the island Ile des Pins, idyllic. Check out the Betico2 boat website.
