GRNC1 / Diving

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi,
where can I get the best info about the GRNC1? I've tramped Korsika and La Reunion and I am familiar with french "GR's". Unfortunately I cannot find any description for the GRNC1 in New Caledonia (where does ist start, where is the most beautiful part,
what infrastructure (gites, foodsupply etc.), maps,........

Any recommondation for diving? Which island (Iles des Pines looks perfect for me....) is the best?

thanks in advance

A nice-looking booklet about it was available in Noumea.
I stayed at a comfortable and free(!) hut intended for its walkers near the Blue River park.
Back then it didn't seem really well-marked - as also shown on the map linked below.

Some info, with a basic map an notes on the various sections, is here - it does at least show you where it starts, etc.

Overall, don't expect anything as stunning as Reunion - southern NC is less mountainous and much of it is badly deforested.
And note that there are good hikes up higher mountains through nicer forest away from this trail, too. I particularly enjoyed climbing Mount Panie .

@ Laszlo
thank you for your comments on New Caledonia - enjoyed your report about climbing Mount Panie. Just came back from Tanzania - two years after climbing Kili we've hiked up on Oldonyo Lengai in the north of Tanzania. Next goal is Galapagos in November. New Caledonia possible next year.......rgds and greetings to Hungary. Gerhard
