Lifou Island for one day - can arrange own tour?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi all
Myself and 3 friends are arriving at Lifou Island in Sept for one day (morn til night), via cruise ship.
The "shore tours" are $60 per person for busses to snorkling etc.

Can anyone who has been here please help me out. We are wondering if we should take our chances after hopping off the ship and look for a local taxi guy to drive us around for the day. How much would it be for a driver for a few hours?

Also, any suggestions for what to do at Lifou? Mostly just snorkelling and beaching? Any markets or must do's?

Thanks in advance

Hey,

From memory there are no taxi's. I stayed for a week in 2006 and hired a car. If you want to fly solo away from the group tour I recommend hiring a car. The roads are good and you can't really get lost.

I recommend going to Peng Beach and the Dokin falaises (cliffs). Peng is a simply stunning white sand beach and great to spend a day sunbaking, swimming and chilling. It is usually pretty empty. I spend two whole days at Peng!

The cliffs at Dokin are AMAZING. The view is incrediable and you can snorkle down the bottom. The reef is pretty nice, although deep in places.
