New Caledonia Camping

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hello,

Me and my partner have booked flights into new caledonia for early feb... We are on a a budget and i understand it is quite expensive. I have read that it is possible to camp there. If anyone can answer or give advice to the following that would be great! I am finding it very hard to find much information..

So we would be looking at flying in and then going to noumea to spend a night. The next morning we would like to get the boat over to isle of pines- I understand there is camp sites there- if anyone could reccomend any that would be great. Also i have read that early feb is rainy/ cyclone season! Obviously it wouldnt be a good idea to camp if there is a chance of a cyclone- now i know you cant predict the weather but if anyone has gone camping this time of the year if they could let me know what it was like that would be great. We would be looking at spending 6 nights doing this, just relaxing on the beach, a bit of exploring. does anyone think this is too long?

If anyone could share their expeiences, reccomend good camping sites, advice on weather THAT WOUDL BE BRILLIANT!

Thankyou, jasmine

Dunno about camping in Noumea, butthere is a great youth hostel there.

On IDP the one campsite in a brilliant postion, is right opposite Kuto beach, the Pacifics finest. There are a number of others eg at Oro . See here for a list of lodging at IDP (including camping) http://www.isle-of-pines.com/lodging.html

Campsites range from about 1000cfp (or about AUD$15) per tent per night (2 man)

Hi,
I may be a little late in replying to your query.
We camped around New Caledonia in July 2007 and really enjoyed it - definitely the cheapest way of staying.
We were disappointed by Ile des Pins, having spent time on Mare and Ouvea before, we thought it was commercial and a bit ruined.
We camped at Gite Nataiwatch which was in a fine position but also very expensive without offering great facilities. It was crowded with French tourists in July and because it was raining, the toilets did not work and there was no water whatsoever, neither cold nor hot.
Relais Le Kouberka was nearby and we regretted we did not move.

On Mare we camped at Chez Leon Duharne which was cheap and basic but he charged an absolute fortune for the transfer.

On Ouvea we camped at Camping de Lekine which really was good, great facilities, great value for money.

On Grand Terre the camp sites can be pretty basic but it is the cheapest way to stay so what can you say?
It usually costs around 1200 to 1500 Fr per tent a night.
New Caledonia is beautiful and the people are wonderful. Enjoy your trip.

Camping here is great. Especially on the East coast. Sites can be a bit pricey at around 1000cfp a night but that's just what it's like here, There are also municipal campsites which are compleetely free of charge although the only one I know of like this is in Touho although I'm sure there are others,
