new caledonia homestay

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi,
I'm planning to visit new caledonia and stay with a family to improve my french. I also love diving and snorkelling. Has anyone out there done a homestay? Where is best for diving and snorkelling? And how much is it likely to cost for accomodation on a homestay? Thanks!

I think it depends on what you mean by "homestay".

Many of the "Gités" are family-run, but they still operate more likle small resorts on or near beaches than real homestays.

For more "real" homestays with Kanak families in largely untouristed villages, the tourist office in Hienghéne runs a program whereby you can stay in a traditional tribal house (with the family probably living in a more modern one nearby) right in a village for as little as 800 francs (ca. 10 AUD) per night - food is extra, of course.
This must be as cheap and authentic as "homestays" get, but may be too basic for many.

The best diving and snorkelling would be on the outer islands, like the Isle of Pines and the Loyalties.
