New Caledonia or Vanuatu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi - I'm going on a 10 day trip with my wife to either New Caledonia or Vanuatu; both seem fantastic. I would love to know if anyone has been to both and what is better for a trip of this duration. Vanuatu seems very hard to travel around (several flights needed). thanks

Ive been to both and prefer New Caledonia
The capital of Vila in Vanuatu is rather sleepy and whilst charming , in my view is not as enjoyable as vibrant Noumea, with its Gallic charm, fine beaches and euro cafe culture.

Beaches in Vanuatu are lovely, but for mine those on Isle Des Pins (in New Caledonia) are so stunning that it has my vote

thanks Mandja - what are your favourite places in New Caledonia? I'm having trouble finding anyone I know who has been there. I'm thinking of going with my wife in late June.

I've also been to both but my most recent trips have been for business so my perspective will be different. The biggest difference will be cost IMO. New Caledonia is more expensive than Paris because it is a French overseas territory. Your money will go much further in Vanuatu.

But that's about the only downside I can think of. I agree with mandja that Noumea is much, much nicer than Port Vila. There is hardly anything in Vila. Food is much better in NC. Vanuatu has malaria outside of Port Vila; NC does not. You'll have your choice of nicer hotels in NC which you'd probably want if you are going with your wife.

Mandja - what are your favourite places in New Caledonia

In Noumea - Place des Cocotiers (main square), the market by waterfront and Baie Des Cittrones
Main Island - loved Highenegene
Other islands - definitely Isles des Pins
