New Caledonia - weather, accommodation and other tips

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi all

I'm planning on a trip to NC for Easter (20th March). I know it's the rainy season, so we can expect some showers or possibly heavy rain. Does anyone know if rain is usually very persistent, or is it more normal to have just thunderstorms? I know you can't predict these things, and anything can happen - but I'd just like to know the general gist.

We're most likely going to get a package from Sydney. Can anyone recommend a good company to go with, or know if any special deals? Or the best places to stay? We are going for just 5 days, so we'll more than likely stay close to Noumea. I'd also be very interested in hearing about self-catering accommodation, as I believe everything is very expensive there.

I'd also love some tips on places to eat, visit, hire cars, dive shops etc...

One last question - I'm a coeliac, so I'm allergic to gluten. I'd appreciate any tips you may have for shops & restaurants that do gluten free food.

Thanks so much

Happy travelling to all

"the best places to stay" - depends on what you like and on your budget. Most tourists prefer to be on or near Anse Vata or the adjacent Baie de Citrone. Both have pleasant beaches, fine cafes are only 10 mins from central Noumea

I have noticed a few good "2 for the price of one deals" around for the period you wish to travel. Try aircaledonieholidays.com or Pacific Holidays, or even just the Qantas web site.
We have been to New Cal in March & found that it only rained for an hour or so in the afternoon, but that was a couple of years ago & whose to say it will be like this in 2008, in any case it won't be cold.
Yes, accommodation in Noumea is relatively expensive but try Casa del Sol for self catering option (this is one of the property options in the 2 for 1 deal)
