| stanskot09:43 UTC03 Jun 2008 | Hey! I'm planning a trip to NC, I know I can search for itineraries but you travellers can advise best! :) Can somebody reccomend a trip with highlights and activities for 5-7 days (starting in Numea propably)? Can you also suggest the costs and accomodation? I know its not a backpakers place but can you still find some backpakers trials (hostels, deals)? Is it easy to move around the islands and which one is worth seeing? Thanks a lot, Stan

New Caledonia is over 18,000 sq kkm and the main islan over 300km long.As for islands, theyre not that close together. Id suggest, other than Noumea, visiting the gorgeous Isle des Pins. You could also visit Hienghene but it is a long way from Noumea, so maybe fly there?- its about 4.5 hours by road from Noumea.

We stayed 2 nights at Noumea Youth Hostel which is highly recommendable: cheap, clean, central, comfortable. Then we flew to Mare, on the Loyalties, which is superb, very nice, very unspoilt. Then 3 nights on Ouvea - again, beautiful, friendly folks, unfortunately an Australian cruise ship ruined the peace and quiet. We camped and hitch-hiked on both islands, which is nice because you meet lots of people and they invite you back to their tribou and offer you coffee etc. We were disappointed by Ile des Pins because it was so busy and commercial after the Loyalties, we wish we had rather gone to Lifou. Grande Terre is wonderful and varied, rent a car and drive around, go to Hiengiene on the west coast, go to Farino, walk in the rain forest, talk to people, watch out for parrots and enjoy being there. We camped everywhere which is cheap if not great, compared to Oz the campsites are not well catered for.
