Noumea Hostel

I have read previous posts about a hostel in Noumea and I have one listed in my older LP but me phone calls and emails have gone unanswered. I also called Hosteling International today and they said they are no longer affiliated with HI. Does anyone know the status of this place and/or have contact info? I am also open to suggestions for other low cost accommodation in Noumea. I am arriving from Cape Town after 3 flights and about 48 hours of travel so I would like to get something arranged in the budget category if possible.

I am surprised. Maybe they changed phone numbers? This is the latest - 00 687 27 58 79

If that doesnt work, I suggest calling the Noumea Tourist Bureau on (687) 24 20 80, as they know more and/or have alternatives.Meantime look here for other choices - http://www.nouvellecaledonietourisme-sud.com/en/accommodation

Unless the hostel has closed altogether, I'd highly recommend going there even without a booking if necessary.
I stayed there several times without advance bookings, and consider it the best hostel I've stayed at in the whole World so far!

Thanks for the very quick replies guys. Turns out the contact info I had was outdated. I did get a response saying they were full but decided to take your advice and check on arrival anyways even without a booking and now have a comfortable and cheap room!

New question though. I was told when I arrived though that the ferry out to the islands was suffering from worker strikes. They don't have much information here, and I am guessing you guys are local or at least very in touch so... do you know if there is any possibility of using the ferry to get to the surrounding islands? I guess my only option might be the more expensive flights.

Sadly, I am not a NC local! ;-)

The German-speaking woman running the hostel seemed to have all local info at her fingertips though...

The main tourist office in the park below the hostel had all the latest about boat-schedules when I was there.
If they say there's none, you may just have to fly, or explore Grande Terre now.
