| capekidnappers06:31 UTC24 Jun 2017 | I'm thinking of a 10 day - 2 week trip to New Caledonia and keen to do some trekking. I know there are some multiday walks across/along the 'Grand Terre' . I'd be travelling on my own. Keen to walk about 15 - 25 km/day. Just wondering if there is a good marked trail and refuge/hut system - and/or any guided walking operation anyone could recommend? Thanks

You must bring all your food from Noumea. It is signposted, you will not meet many other people. There is an official guidebook with maps of this trail, which you could buy on the web i guess. However in Noumea you may find sheets with the same content for free. And electronic versions on the web. possibly Always in French anyway.

I will try to find a guide written in English. I wonder how well this trail is marked. Also do we need to carry cooking gear - stoves etc? And re the first place and camping, do you know the distance, I'm wondering about one long day to avoid a camping stopover - less gear to carry! Also, do you know of any trails in the northern part of the Grand Terre? Thanks

To avoid camping, you can bypass the whole first part of the GR and start closer to the 'chutes de la Madeleine' which has a hut for hikers. Yes, you need a stove. There is also a GR of the Northern province but i don't know how far it is signposted and documented, and whether it can be done without a local Kanak guide. There are well other signposted dayhikes.
