weather in nov. and snorkeling

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

We want to travel to New Caledonia in early November. What is the weather like? Is it raining all the time, or just sometimes?

Is it possible to rent snorkeling equipment over there? Where are some good snorkeling spots?

I read about renting a bungalow, but haven't found info on how to do that ahead of time, maybe online. Is that possible? Are the bungalows near buses or other transport? Or should we just stay in Noumea for better transport access?

hi tararisk,

november is one of those months when it can rain a lot but it doesn't have to at the same time. Recently the weather has been unpredictable, winter months between april and october are usually dry and cool, but this year it's been raining quite a lot. sorry can't be more precise but it is hard to predict anything these days.

snorkeling can be done pretty much everywhere in the country including noumea. Some good spots around noumea would include small islets 5-30 mins off the coast: duck island (ilot aux canards), master island (ilot maitre) and amedee island (phare amedee). although the latter one needs to be booked in advance with tour operators - well worth it though! plus you get to climb to the top of the lighthouse and have a stunning 360 view on the lagoon.

snorkeling gear can be rented from some tour operators or in case of amedee island, it can be rented on the island. otherwise you can buy it in sports shops and supermarkets at a fairly cheap price.
