what food will make it through customs?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / New Caledonia

Hi all

We are flying from NZ to NC for a weeks holiday in 3 weeks time. We are both vegetarian, one gluten free and basically have picky diets and like to cook for ourselves. To save on buying up in Noumea, and to just have the things we like, we wish to bring a good amount of food with us, but I'm worried lots might be confiscated. We would want to bring: noodles, dehydrated fruit, nuts, soy protein, dry beans, spices, muesli, crackers etc.
Anyone know how strict customs are and which of these things might be risky?
Thanks
Claire

Most customs sites have very specific details on what is acceptable and what is not...
not quite official but informative:

from experience I'd say 'no open packages'

Thanks sfgirl :) yes I did find this site but apart from the meat (not a problem for us) its not very detailed. I found a site regarding boat customs which got me worried
"The following food items will be confiscated: delicatessen meats, fresh/frozen meat, eggs & dairy produce, honey, fresh fruit & vegetables. Goods are taken regardless of origin (even if purchased in New Caledonia on an earlier visit) and the boat is likely to be searched for them. It is therefore best to arrive with as little fresh and frozen food as possible."
But, from this I think I will be OK with my above list also. Thanks for your personal experience, will make sure packages are sealed where possible - we do make our own muesli, spices will be in small bags etc but might just have to hope for the best!
:) Very much looking forward to the trip.
