Niue travel

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Niue

Hi,

We're a small group of friends planning to do a week in Niue next summer/fall, and we're having a bit of a hard time finding good, up-to-date travel advise and information. We hope to do approx. 10 days in the Auckland area, NZ, and then to fly out to Niue for about a week. First of all we're wondering if the flights go as scheduled, or if this distance (NZ-Niue) often experiences delays and/or cancellations due to weather, unreliable flight operators and so on. Are mishaps frequent? I suppose the cyclone season is difficult, but we're probably going between mid-August and mid-September.

Secondly, should we book hotels, hire cars etc. in advance? Are there any preferred ways of staying and getting around in the country? Are there a lot of businesses such as restaurants, adventure companies and so on there? I've read that the country has experienced a considerable population decline in the last 10-15 years, so I guess I'm asking whether this has had an impact on the travel experience :-)

Any other tips, should-knows and ideas are well appreciated! Thanks :-)

Have been there twice. Its a regular scheduled flight and was on time both times.
I would book accommodation and you do need a rental car to get around.
You need to get a Niue drivers license. If you have accommodation booked they would pick you up from the airport and take you to get your rental car and license.
There are enough restaurants and adventure companies to cover the small number of visitors that the island can accommodate at any one time.
The lack of residents does not affect the experience.
There are no beaches but plenty of access to the ocean, most are down paths in the cliffs so you need to be reasonably fit.
We snorkeled from the wharf quite a lot as it was easier access, the visibility was amazing in the open ocean.
Had no problem with the many sea snakes and found we could swim from shore to Snake Gully after taking a snorkel tour.

I have been there multiple times and you will definitely have a visit to one of the nicest places ever. I would recommend you contact Peleni Travels in Niue. They can arrange car and lodging. I have no commercial interest in Peleni.

Thank you all for your great info :-) I understand, then, that Niue is a destination worth going to! It is - pretty much literally - on the opposite side of the globe, so it would be awesome to go.

Now, one more question: we're going to be staying in and around Auckland for a good week before leaving, are there any supplies that we should purchase in NZ before we go? Anything we may have a hard time finding on Niue?

Anything we may have a hard time finding on Niue?
Nothing that I can think of. We just take ourselves and our own snorkeling gear when we go to the Pacific islands.
