1 week honey moon in Palau

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Palau

Hello.
I'm planing to go to Palau for 1 week for a honey moon vacations trip.
We have been in south east Asia twice mainly in Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, sumatra, java, bali, gili's, Singapore, KL, Palawan.
We have dive 3 times before however we doesn't have a license.
In Palau We are planning to do a fun dive, or get the license before the trip and do not so advanced dive in palau.
And also do some snorkelling that we like a lot.

1- we are planning to stay in Palau for 7 days and 6 nights. It's enough time to explore palau? too much days? or should we stay more?.
2- what are the main attractions that we shouldn't miss?
3- any recommended place to stay?
4- we were thinking to stop in Yap or Guam when going back, does't it worth it?.
5- any recommendation or tips would be kindly received.

After Palau we are planning to go to some places in south east Asia that we haven been, mainly: Penang, Rai lay and laos. Recommendations also kindly received.

Thansk for your support.
Jaime.

Hi,

I do not think it is too much time at all. Head to Sam's Tours and they will sort you out. I recommend at least 2-3 days of diving. A day trip to jellyfish lake (see my experience here: http://www.nomadic-by-nature.com/palaus-golden-jellyfish-of-the-sun/ ) and then a one to two day kayak trip through the rock islands.

Best,

Mike

Any recommended place to stay?

Hi Jaime,

Unfortunately, I cannot remember where I stayed as it was not that memorable. I would ask the guys at Sam's for recommendations.

Best,

Mike

We are budget travelers but splurged out for a 3 night stay at Caroline Resort, about a 5-10 minute drive from Koror. For a honeymoon this would be a nice option - they provided a shuttle service to town and had exchange priveleges at the Pacific Palau Resort(the nicest place in Palau) so we could use the beach and pool there - very nice snorkeling off the beach - the restaurant was nice for lunch, but, as can be expected, was a bit pricey! These details are from a number of years ago so may be different today.
We then transfered to Lehn's Motel in Koror - a basic budget place with a kitchen for self catering - we were happy with our chioce. We rented a car for a couple of days and explored the big island of Babeldaob - the museum in Koror was interesting - the aquarium as well - a nice break for days when we didn't snorkel.
We also did tours with Sam's and can highly recommend them, although we did not dive as we are snorkelers only. Palau's underwater life is amazing - some of the best snorkeling we have done and well worth the cost to get there.

Jamie - that is indeed the place we stayed but it looks like it is under new management. I see that you now have to pay to visit the PPR - it was included when we stayed in 2009. At the time the PPR was charging US$25 per person per day to enjoy their facilities - it would be interesting to see what the cost is now. It has great views but you have to walk uphill to get to the bungalows - for people with mobility problems it might be a challenge. There is no restaurant but with a mini fridge and coffee/tea making options you could bring in some basic things for making sandwiches or having breakfast. We used their shuttle to have dinner in Koror. We booked inadvance - they were popular when we were there and were often booked out. Hope this helps - sure wish we could get back that way!

Thanks again for the information. We are going to stay 1 or 2 nights in carolines and then in downtown Koror.

Regarding the activities:
- It's worth to do the paddling Palau overnight expedition compared to the normal day tours?. We are considering to do a overnight expedition however it's really expensive and the minimum is 3 days. And on the 3 day it goes to German lighthouse that doesn't sound to spectacular.
- it's safe to rent a kayak and do by our own? which places we could go by our own?.
- what are the main places/tours/activities that we couldn“t miss?.
- we were thinking about: long lake, Risong bay, Nikko bay and jellyfish lake.

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.
Regards.

Jaime.
