Kayangel camping

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Palau

Hi,

Does any one knows where I can contact for camping in Kayangel? If you have any information regarding to Kayangel, please leave a message. Really appreciate!

I would contact the Kayangel State Gov office in Koror. We spent a couple of night up there, although it was a number of years ago now. You have to find a ride up there as there is no service, but I suspect that the office would be able to help. You have to bring up a "gift" for the chief- we were advised to bring up fresh bread and rolls from town. It was a bit of a hair raising trip out over the open water- our engines went down and I imagined us drifting forever. But it was a memorable trip. Try to go on the new moon when if you are lucky with the clouds, the stars are great.

Cool! Thanks a lot, 5Waldos!

Can't imagine how was it like when the engine failed. Did you ever thought about it was the captain teasing his passengers just to get you an one of a kind travel exeprience? LOL.

Did you chartered a boat the last time you went up there? What about food and drinking water? You fixed camp fire and tossed a beach BBQ for every meal on the atoll and brought a lot of bottled water? I assume there's a steep price tag, but I really want to try camping on an uninhabited island.

Ah- Kayangel is NOT uninhabited- there are people there. A village. I really don't remember what we ate- we brought along stuff and I think grilled some fish, of course.

No the captain wasn't teasing us. We knew him well- the motors were out. But there were a fair number of other boats- small 16 ft boats with an engine mostly, loaded down with people, on the "road". We did charter a boat since there were 4 of us. It is also possible to try and hitch a ride out with some locals- pay for the gas and you are in. Again the state office might be able to help you with that.

If you want to camp on a totally uninhabited island there are some islands in the rock islands much closer (and cheaper to get to) where you can camp. They are completely uninhabited- unless you believe the stories of the ghosts. They are quite small- tiny. Walk around the perimeter in 5 minutes or so. And some other larger ones where you can camp- usually nobody around at night, although there are sometimes parties out there.

Hi Evan- There is a island boat to Kayangel as of 2005, it leaves T-Dock every other Friday and returns on Sunday. That leaves you a two day window on Kayangel. There is a neighboring island that you can cross to at low tide and you can camp on that island. Contact the Governor's office in Koror, phone 488-2766 in Koror, 876-2967 on Kayangel, for permission and assistance if you want to stay with a host family. Keep in mind you will need to bring along provisions, there are only a couple of mini marts on the island. Look up Jason Kramberg on the island, he teaches at the school there, tell him hi from Papa Mike.
