Palau ATMs and phones

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Palau

Hi, I've booked a flight to Palau on the new Pacific Flier airline, heading off in a couple of weeks. A couple of practical questions -

  • are there ATMs? If so, just in one specific spot, or easy to find?
  • will my Australian mobile phone work? I'm guessing the answer to this one is that they probably use the American system in which case the answer will be 'no'.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Based on my 2006 experiences:

Yes, there are ATMS. But only in downtown Koror. I saw (and used) at least (hmm...) - one. Easy to find though. By the main street.
My norwegian mobile phone (works just fine in Australia) did not work in Palau.

There is an ATM at the Bank of Hawaii and another one at the shopping center (that's what it is called) across from Surangles. For the life of me I can't remember what it is called. They don't always work, in part because of the high humidity, in part because they aren't always filled. There are probaby some other ones by now but almost certainly only in Koror. Don't have a clue about phones- when we were there they were just getting direct dial overseas phoning.

Many thanks, efltatjan and 5Waldos. Sounds like I should be able to get some cash if I run out. And if no-one can ring me ... well, that's just another bonus!

You can go to the bank and get money if the machiess are down. Have a great time- I am definately getting Back to the Island stirrings. I can taste the taro soup at the PPR from here in Colorado.

Yanos- the "mall" next door to Yanos market (I knew it would come to me).

You're thinking of the WCTC, where the Ben Franklin store is located. I think there's an ATM in front of the Bank of Guam also.

Yes- WCTC. Been long enough that I don't remember all the names. Just that it is next door to Yanos where you can get the tapioca with coconut cream.

You can't use your Australian cell phone subscription because there are no roaming agreements between Australian (or Norwegian) operators and Palau Mobile: http://www.palaumobile.com/PMC_Roaming_Partners.xls

If you get a Palau SIM card, you should be able to use your Australian phone since Palau uses the same frequency bands as in Australia (i.e. NOT U.S. band).

There's an ATM at the airport. Which is very useful when you just arrive. Also remember that it's about a 45 minute drive from one side of the island to the other so you're never very far removed from an ATM on Babeldaob. Many of the larger places accept credit card. I don't know why you were going but I was very pleased to find out that Sam's didn't surcharge.
