Palau in December- first time in the PacificCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Palau
After finding a good deal ($455 USD return!) from Amsterdam, I decided to book a flight to Palau. I'll be going in early December next year for just one week, plus a night in Taipei. Have booked a bed in the dorm at the hostel in Koror. Palau (and the Pacific generally) has never really been on my radar; so I don't have any particular expectations. I'm not a diver (though I might take a PADI course before then) but would definitely like to do some snorkelling. I understand that Palau is/was a bit overrun in places by tour groups from China (is that still the case?) and that the jellyfish lake tours are no longer operating (only found that out after booking the flight- oops). I'm not really expecting an idyllic, untouched paradise or countless activities to occupy my time, especially given that I'm a non-diver. In terms of things to see/do, the vague plan is to take a trip to the Rock Islands, spend a day kayaking, spend a day on the main island exploring, visiting the capitol building, waterfalls etc. I would really like to see a crocodile (from a safe distance!)- are there any safe trips to see them (I heard there was a jungle river cruise?) and spend time hiking/exploring the countryside/villages. Bearing in mind that I only have a week, so probably wouldn't be able to get to the outer islands (though I think there are day trips to Peleliu?) what advice/recommendations do people have? Is there any WWII detritus lying around on Babeldaob or is a trip to Peleliu a must for that? Sorry this is a bit vague; usually I only book flights to places I have some idea about from months/years of prior research; this is the first time I've booked a ticket somewhere almost entirely unknown (I've never been to the Pacific Islands, or even East/Southeast Asia before) purely based on price and the idea that I might enjoy it there (most recent trip was to Sao Tome e Principe, so I can cope with laid back, rural islands). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Hi | 1 | |
Hi Sven, No, I am flying before then. Forget the name of the hostel but it was on booking.com. Flights found via Skyscanner. | 2
