Palua on a Budget- Help!Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Palau
So I am doing an around the world on a budget backpackers style. I have a week in Palau which I am stoaked for but not about the cost's so I'm looking for help to keep in budget. Here the deal: I arrive July 14th and Stay till the 21st I need help with the following
Palau is amazing so any help on how to do it cheap would be awesome!!
You have to go out to the rock islands at least once snorkeling. to be in Palau and not would be a high crime. And be sure it includes as stop at Jellyfish lake- one of the natural wonders of the world. Cheap lodging has been covered here many times- I usually don't stay cheap or stay as a local so am no real help. The museum on the main street in downtown is quite good and I would recommend it. Have a bowl of taro leaf soup and a sunset drink at the Palau Pacific Resort- wonderful setting. Go to the clam farm at the end of icebox point- take the left fork as you go out of Koror proper toward the hospital. go to the end and there you are. | 1
There are a variety of budget lodgings in Koror, check out the Palau Tourism web site for a list. $15.00 a night is only an option in shared rooms. DW Motel or HK Motel are around $35.00 last I checked. For seven nights you may be able to negotiate a discount, depending on availability. 5Waldos suggestions for attractions is a good start, maybe visit Peleliu if you are interested in WWII relics. Have a great trip! Papa Mike | 2
Try to spend as much time as possible in the rock islands. A day spent in Koror is a day wasted (unless you are provisioning/arranging your trips elsewhere). The $15 motel was either in Peleliu or Angaur. | 3
Awesome, thats for all the info. Does anyone know if you can camp on the beaches there? | 4
PS do you know what the name of those places you can do room shares for $15 a night are? I've been doing hostels so dorm style is AOK with me. | 5
There are a couple of beaches where you can get permission to sleep, but it is unusual and usually it is groups that sleep on the beaches- outings and parties. We camped for a couple of nights on one of the beaches in Peliliu, but it was a big group, and a rather wild few days. But lots of fun. Saw my first sharks while snorkeling that weekend. You might want to email to the college and see if there are dorm rooms that can be rented, depending on when you are there. I don't know if they do or not. In truth Palau is not a cheap place, although certainly it is possible to keep costs down. I think they figure that anyone who can afford to get there has money. You can take the local ferry over to Peliliu cheaply, but I think you have to fly to Anguar, a gorgeous short flight but does rather defeat the purpose if you are going there only for cheap rooms. | 6
A year ago the Anguar ferry was running, you can email the tourist office for the latest info. I spent time in Peliliu looking for a beautiful beach. Didn't find one but came across a squatters beach, thank goodness no one was around. Saw a tent set up in the bushes. I'd be careful around there. The nickname for Peliliu is Columbia. But if you are game for camping and get a kayak you can easily get to the beaches on the edge of Koror. (Only accessible via boat.) My rather bad review of Lee Marvin beach is here: http://kayakingpalau.blogspot.com/2008/10/lee-marvin-beach.html Note: the "outer" rock island beaches that I visited were all lovely and clean. (Need to navigate dangerous surf to get there, see my blog.) The ones close to Koror aren't maintained and seemingly draw a bad crowd. | 7
