10 Days in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi all

I am going to be flying in to PM in early March for 10 days. I am basically looking for a place on the beach where we can do some diving, and also would be interested in doing a few day walk if possible . Can anyone recomend anywhere around PM (or anywhere else if we can fly there from PM) that might be what we are looking for.

Thanks
Rich

I can heartily recommend New Ireland as a great place to visit and dive/walk, but it's quite a long flight from PM.
Ditto New Britain - these 2 could also be combined in 10 days though.

Places like Tufi or islands in Milne Bay province would be much closer, but I haven't been to those myself.

hi, i would say Madang would be OK to visit (1 hour flight from Port Moresby). i recently returned from Madang and found the water very nice, especially if you can get up to Bogia which is about 3 hours north by PMV. Dont be put off by the 3 hours, the drive is one of the nicest you could have, and the diving is better than directly off Madang (althiugh there are some great dives straight out of Madang). Bogia has some homestay style accomodations and the view of both Karkar and Manam Island are spectacular. In saying this, i have only ever heard good reports about New Ireland also. Whatever you do, DO go to PNG and enjoy this amazing country.

Rich Milne bay is perfect for what you want. Alotau is an hour's flight from Port Moresby. There is some of the best diving available as day dives and heaps of trekking and bush walking. Check out the local website: www.milnebaytourism.gov.pg Highly recommended. the Papuans are hospitable people and so friendly. Gretta

Madang is great, have a few resorts really set up for divers. Cheap, friendly, safe, and Madang is pretty laidback.

Whatever you do, get out of PM. It's a hole, nothing to see. Just book an internal flight, not too expensive, and all of them are fun 8-seater planes with amazing views...bear in mind there is only one highway that crosses only part of the country. PNG travel requires mostly air travel.
