2019 Crocodile Festival and Kwoma Culture Festival

The dates have now been confirmed for the 2019 Sepik River Crocodile Festival in Ambunti ESP.

It will run for three days from Monday 5 August to Wednesday 7 August 2019.

Following the Crocodile Festival the Kwoma Culture Festival, a smaller local festival, will this year be held in Mariwai on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 August with overnight celebrations including fire dances.

The Kanganamun Tambuna Festival for the middle Sepik this year is slated for Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August but these dates will be confirmed nearer the time.

Mariwai is easier to get to than Tongwinjamb where the Kwoma Festival has been held in previous years. It is right on the lagoon where the Sanchi River meets the Sepik about an hour and half by canoe upstream from Ambunti.

Transport to/from Ambunti and accommodation in the village can be arranged in Ambunti during the Crocodile Festival.

Smaller festivals like this and the Tambuan Festival may not be as spectacular as the main festivals but they have a much more distinct local flavour and the chance to participate in village life.

Never been to PNG but curious as to what a trip to the 3 festivals you mention would cost and is there such a tour offered?

well prices vary wildly for sepik trips depending on what is offerred - i suggest you read posts here and on the tripadvisor forum to see what kind of experiences are available and at what cost

The Kwoma mini Culture Show will start in the morning on Wed 7 August and continue through the day and overnight through till mid afternoon on Thu 8

The highlight will be the ceremony in the Spirit House starting on Wed evening and overnight with fire dances. This is the real thing and all the big chiefs will be present making for a very special event.
