4-5 days in Rabaul/ Kavieng

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello... I've never been to PNG and was looking at dates mid-September (next year) for a quick trip to Rabaul and Kavieng from Brisbane or Cairns (naturally flying first into Port Moresby). On the AirNiugini website I notice that there are typically a couple of daily flights from Port Moresby to each town, and possibly a flight between the two.

What is the weather mid-September generally like in Rabaul and Kavieng? There seems to be a lot of variance on the various websites and guidebooks regarding this. Also, I was planning to spend a couple of days in each spot - any ideas/ recommendations or comments on logistics will be appreciated?

Thanks

I've been in both in September - fine weather wise.

As for what to do - I was in Kavieng for scuba diving - but not sure what else s on offer there other than lazing on a beach which I'm not into. There's a market - same as everywhere - & I think there's a tour down the highway to an eel farm - haven't been on it personally.

Rabaul on the other hand - volcano - go see it - sulphur creek - matupit island - there's the view from the volcanic observatory over the harbour - the barge tunnels - couple of golf courses if you play - Kokopo Museum - diving - fishing if you like that sort of thing - lot of history in the old ruined town. Brilliant place - love it to bits. (I am a weirdo)

Thanks. I'm not a diver (yet) so I go mostly for the scenery. The area sounds very dramatic from what I'm reading.

Just saw your post...

I flew Kavieng to Rabaul in April 2009 on a direct flight, so yes that's definitely an option. Bear in mind that Air Nuigini flights are delayed or cancelled more frequently than what you might be used to on other airlines.

Kavieng - if you want to lie back and relax, look at Lisseung or Nusa Island. As of April 2009, i would have to say avoid Malagan's on the mainland - it's not worth the money. Maybe things will have improved though...

Rabaul - don't miss snorkelling at the Submarine Base ! It is awesome (i'm a diver, but would always choose to snorkel there instead). You get great views of Tavurvur from Kokopo, but I'd also recommend a couple of nights over at the Rabaul Hotel, amongst the ash. You can also do an early morning trip out to the base of Tavurvur (if it's behaving). And don't miss the War Memorial near Kokopo.

Have fun !
