Accommodation in Kavieng, New Ireland

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi all,
I'm heading to Kavieng, New Ireland in May/June this year for a 6-week medical school elective. I am on a budget and was wondering if anyone who has been to Kavieng before could recommend any cheap accommodation for my 6 week stay.
Cheers,
Michael

G'day mate,

not sure If we've been in touch already via pnghealthpartnerships.org if not feel free to have a look!

Cheap accomodation is the hardest thing about an elective in Kavieng, something we really need to work on... There's the Peter Torot but my cousins who were there last year tell me even that has gone up in price! And it's certainly not luxurious..

Try asking the New Ireland Tourist Bureau

Thanks Jonathan,
We haven't been in touch before...though I originally got the contact details for the hospital through pnghealthpartnerships.org. I have to compliment you on the great website...I've gained a lot of valuable information and insight from it. I hope that it helps attract a lot more interested students to undertake an elective in PNG.
Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael & Jonno,

I was hoping you guys might be able to point me in the right direction with how to organise a final year medical student elective at Kavieng General Hospital - it sounds like a fantastic experience, and I am keen to spend 6 weeks there early next year (2013). At this stage I have emailed Dr Joseph Kuk whose email address I got from the http://www.pnghealthpartnerships.org (which is fantastic by the way Jonno) - but I am yet to hear back from him. Any advice or tips?

Thanks guys - look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,
Kyra

Hey Kyra,
When I applied I just sent Dr Kuk an email aswell. How long ago did you send the email? i guess just give it some time and if not send another email.
Good luck getting it organised.

Hello everyone.

I have also emailed Dr Joseph Kuk recently to arrange for a 4-5weeks elective early next year 2013.
Maybe I will meet you there, Kyra?
He has only replied me once to say that the hospital is able to accept me during that period.
Haven't hear from him after I replied to ask for me details.
Not very sure what to do now actually. I guess waiting is my best option?

Any advice or tips?
I am on a tight budget as well. Really hoping to find some cheap accommodation.

Thanks guys!
Good luck :)

Cheers,
Adeline

Hi everyone,

I'm heading to Kavieng from the UK for an elective in late Jan-March 2013. Has anyone had any luck with accommodation ideas? I've had Peter Torot Centre recommended to me too. Also, in relation to some of the previous posts, I wouldn't worry if it's taken a while for Dr Kuk to get back to you - I've had some lengthy gaps between e-mails.

Freddie.
