Advised against visiting in December?

Hello all,

Looking for people who have traveled to PNG in December or people living in PNG (even better :) ).

We were planning to visit PNG in December, but we were advised against it as we got told that everyone is trying to get money for Christmas so there will be a lot more hasslers around and a lot more drunks (not my words).

Wondering how much truth there is in this?
Are there places maybe better to avoid, ...?

For what it's worth, I did not have any hassle travelling 4 weeks in PNG during December 2015. Minor inconvenience may be the rainy season but that wasn't very bad either
