Airport Tax levied on passengers embarking on international flights at the Port Moresby airport

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello,

I plan to fly in from Cairns, Australia, and back next month.

Am I liable to pay up this tax of PGK30 upon leaving the Port Moresby airport on the way back?

Cheers,

if its a regular scheduled flight this will be included in the ticket price

NB if you are australian you need a visa in advance

1

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I happen to be Japanese and understand that I will be able to obtain a visa upon arrival free of charge at Port Moresby, would I?

2

yes japanese can get a free VoA

on arrival at POM dont get caught up in the long queue for visas - push to the front as there is a special line for VoA - it was on the right hand side but the airport is being revamped so the layout may have changed

Legendary advice, mate.

In your opinion, majordom, what kind of precaution, besides common sense (e.g., no walking at night, and showing valuables in public), should a traveler pay in visiting POM? Although I am not deterred to come and visit POM, I try to be well-prepared in the light of my own security.

Also, I am bringing a sleeping bag with me and wonder if there is a camp site or some sort?

Cheers,

camping in moresby ?!?!?! i dont think there is anywhere - it is a sprawling third world city and is generally not safe so i really would not recommend this idea - although a sleeping bag might come in handy given the lack of cleanliness in some of the budget accommodation options !

what exactly are your plans ? there is not much to see in moresby - for most people it is just a gateway to the rest of PNG

5

Hi again,

I have not decided on what to do, except landing and leaving at and from POM.

Unlike some others travelers, I am not so keen on architectural, historical or traditional stuff; rather immerse myself in the real contemporary life of PNG, which I am dead sure is such discrepant to what one would believe through media. What would you suggest, if I may ask you, majordom?

not easy in moresby - it is dangerous and erratic - sprawling with no public transport or even reliable taxi service - there is no real city centre where you can hang out in cafes by day or bars by night

you could visit the markets or the vision city mall and meet locals there - churches as well if thats your thing

take precautions and make sure you have a safe way to get home before it gets dark - before going off with someone to another location get other people to vouch for them - even in the city people know the good guys and rogues

so you might want to look at other places - maybe alotau and the islands or new britain for an easier and safer visit
